“It all revolved around the premise that we were going to have public financing,” said the Prestonsburg Democrat. “What will happen if you don’t make those corrections? I think it will be chaotic.” State Rep. Steve Nunn, who plans to seek the Republican nomination for governor next year, said he had not seen Stumbo’s proposal and that it was too early to say what kind of support it would get in the General Assembly.

But, he said, the laws do need to be reviewed. “Certainly, when the rules of the game change, you need to look at the whole concept related to how campaigns are run,” said Nunn, of Glasgow. Stumbo, a lawyer who has filed to run for attorney general next year, said some parts of the law also need to be clarified. In the 1995 race, the Democratic party spent about $1.8 million to help Patton get elected. The Republican party spent about $100,000 on its candidate, the report said.

Democratic House leadership finally backed off last week in light of the state’s strapped budget. But the law remains on the books. Stumbo agreed with Republicans that the law was flawed, but said he hoped the legislature would revisit the issue. St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood is one of the 10 best places in the nation to have a baby, a national lifestyle magazine has concluded. Fit Magazine, in a special report in its December/January issue, put St. Elizabeth on its top 10 list. The magazine said the top 10 hospitals were recognized for combining personal touches like liberal visitor policies with high-tech expertise, such as immediate access to a neonatal intensive-care unit.
